Physical therapy has been proven an essential part of treatment for arthritis. While the arthritic joint itself can not be changed, the focus of physical therapy is management of the disease. There are several key factors to managing the disease including: education on more stable positions for the joints, stabilization exercises to improve joint stability, instruction in assistive devices if needed and self stretches to improve mobility.

Connective Tissue Disorders
Connective tissue disorders, such a Marfan or Ehlers-Danlos syndrome, cause systemic joint laxity of varying severity. Joint laxity leads to instability and pain. Stan Guest, PT, OCS, OMPT has extensive experience treating these disorders. He has personally lived with a connective tissue disorder and has experienced the daily struggle to maintain an active lifestyle with minimal pain. He has produced a unique training program in which clients learn to protectively posture and to actively stabilize the joints in safe positions throughout there various daily activities, including sport participation. In addition to working full time as Physical Therapist and despite the struggles posed by his connective tissue disorders, Stan remains a Master’s track competitor.
